What's the procedure for having a tooth bonded?

This procedure requires little preparation and usually no anesthesia, unless the bonding material is being used to fill a decayed tooth. The doctor chooses a composite resin color that closely matches the color of the tooth.
The doctor roughens the surface of the tooth, and then applies the putty-like material that gets molded and smoothed to the desired shape. The doctor uses a special, high-tech ultra-violet light to harden the material.
Then follows additional trimming and polishing the tooth surface.

What are the advantages of dental bonding?

Pocelain bonding is easy and relatively inexpensive compared with other cosmetic dental procedures, such as crowns and veneers that require customized tooth coverings to be made in a laboratory. Bonding usually can be completed in one visit. And with bonding, the least amount of tooth surface or enamel is removed.
Many dentists view bonding as best suited for small cosmetic changes, for short-term correction of defects, or areas with low bite pressure like the front of the mouth.

Do bonded teeth require special care?

No. Simply follow good oral hygiene practices and brush and floss daily.
It is also important to avoid biting fingernails, chewing on pens, ice or other hard food objects.

How long does a bonding last?

The life-span of bonding depends on the size of the area that received the bonding and oral habits. Bonding can last for years.
