Questions About Dental Bonding

What's the procedure for having a tooth bonded?

  • This procedure requires little preparation and usually no anesthesia, unless the bonding material is being used to fill a decayed tooth. The doctor chooses a composite resin color that closely matches the color of the tooth.
  • The doctor roughens the surface of the tooth, and then applies the putty-like material that gets molded and smoothed to the desired shape. The doctor uses a special, high-tech ultra-violet light to harden the material.
  • Then follows additional trimming and polishing the tooth surface.

What are the advantages of dental bonding?

  • Pocelain bonding is easy and relatively inexpensive compared with other cosmetic dental procedures, such as crowns and veneers that require customized tooth coverings to be made in a laboratory. Bonding usually can be completed in one visit. And with bonding, the least amount of tooth surface or enamel is removed.
  • Many dentists view bonding as best suited for small cosmetic changes, for short-term correction of defects, or areas with low bite pressure like the front of the mouth.

Do bonded teeth require special care?

  • No. Simply follow good oral hygiene practices and brush and floss daily.
  • It is also important to avoid biting fingernails, chewing on pens, ice or other hard food objects.

How long does a bonding last?

  • The life-span of bonding depends on the size of the area that received the bonding and oral habits. Bonding can last for years.
